The Hotel Palace You dont have to be rich and famous to stay at the Hotel Palace in Milan,
Italy, although many guests are. Simply put, if you want a luxurious, classical, relaxing,
safe, discreet retreat from worldly preoccupations, youll find it at the Hotel
Palace. Many people from the world of fashion, music and Italian soccer, people who are
always in the limelight stay at this Five Star luxurious hotel. Whether in Milan for
leisure or corporate activities, the Hotel Palace provides.
This hotel is not only for those who can afford it, between $200 and $1,150 per accommodation per night, depending on currency fluctuations, it is for those who appreciate tradition, discretion, luxury, and genuine first class service
The concierge at Hotel Palace was current on all cultural happenings, and helped me to arrange for a ticket to a dance production of Carmen at the Theatre Piccolo. Although its possible to book tickets online, in advance of traveling, I didnt. The concierge booked my ticket, and it was a comfortable 20 minutes or so to stroll to the theatre. Although the Hotel Palace is situated right on the Piazza della Repubblica with trains and trolleys a half a block a way and taxis at the door, it was unquestionably preferable walking in the cool, August evening through the cobblestone streets, passing sophisticated Italian shops and cafes. Returning to the Hotel Palace later that evening, I really took notice of the unusual red granite façade. The slabs are from Assuan, extracted from quarries known for stones of exceptional refinishing qualities, with natural soft, dark tones. The facade was redone in this modern style during a major remodeling that raised the building by two stories over its former 10 on the front and by four stories on its wings. My rooms were on the 11th floor, front, looking across to a little park. Originally built in 1950 on the remains of a preceding Palace that had been destroyed by bombs in 1943, the Hotel Palace overlooks Piazza della Repubblica . Inside, the ambience has elements of the Classic, Neoclassic, Renaissance, and Post-Modern style. Downstairs, theres an indoor golf course, the first in all of Italy, with a team of Pros and instructors and a computerized simulator system that allows guests to play in the atmosphere of one of the 30 most famous international championship courses in the world.
Dont be shy about learning a little Italian before you go, just check out one of the many web references to the language, or buy a guidebook before leaving home. If you wait until you get there, as I did, there are centrally located bookstores with plenty of stock. This was the first time in my traveling history I wanted to "bookend" my trip with a Five Star hotel. Here was my plan: after a long international flight from San Francisco I wanted to treat myself to a safe, luxurious, comfortable two nights to pass through jet lag before launching my European excursion. Then, after six weeks of intensive Mediterranean travel, I would relax and feel pampered before the long international flight home. It worked. Although Sheratons ownership of this grand old hotel has brought the hotel more into the international scene, the Hotel Palace has not lost its old identity and is working to become the great international hotel of the next century. In the words of the distinguished general manager, Mr. Renzo Correzzola, "You cant just pretend to be the best, you have to be the best".
